PODCAST
This page is to showcase the work that I did with my group members to create a podcast that reflects the role of Disney films on the question; how do Disney films contribute to the construction of society's values and norms about gender roles? Throughout the process of making this podcast I learned how the big influence Disney has on both young impressionable minds and older viewers. I was also able to practice the course objective of collaborating with my peers since we had to create a cohesive script to use in the podcast.
Pre-production: Preparation and Planning
OBJECTIVE:
"Improve your written literacy, digital literacy, and overall communication skills across several media"
The assignment I chose to focus on was the Close Reading Practice: Looking into the Magic Mirror, Haas and Trapedo. This assignment was vital towards creating my script for this podcast because it served as an example of a writer analyzing Disney films.
I was able to learn about the specifics of what I should look for when analyzing such as the appearance, dialogue, and singing parts as well. When I was finding parts of the film to reference in my part of the podcast I also tried to look for speaking or singing parts and appearance of the female character. Through this process I was able to improve my written and digital literacy skills by analyzing various films.
Production: Creating the Microsite and Podcast
OBJECTIVE:
"Improve your ability to write prose that is readable, focused, and full of details"
For the podcast project, I took on the role as podcast script editor. One of the things I contributed was organizing the script with everyone's ideas so that the podcast could flow well and be cohesive. Another aspect of the podcast that I contributed towards was creating a summary of our podcast to put on the microsite. I combined the main ideas of the podcast and made it into a concise paragraph. This was an important part because the viewers should know the brief overview of the podcast just by reading the summary.
The third thing I contributed was my analysis and commentary on social construction from body image portrayed in the film The Little Mermaid. I think the most important thing I contributed was the script organization and podcast summary. All of these parts work together to create a well written and cohesive podcast. This helped me to improve the course objective of writing that is readable, focused, and full of details.
Looking Ahead in Three Paragraphs
OBJECTIVE:
"Practice collaboration and learn how to be an effective collaborator"
While working on this podcast project some mistakes I made was focusing on only the main character. I analyzed the film, The Little Mermaid and my main source of evidence was how Ariel was portrayed. For next time, I would try to focus on other characters such as Prince Eric, Ursula, and King Triton. Also, due to the fact that this is an earlier Disney film, there is not much character development and focus on the supporting characters. In current Disney films, they try to show the main character growing with their supporting characters.
